Meredith might have been my favourite, but the story needed Nina equally as much.
Winter Garden | Kristin Hannah | Macmillan
Of course, the real backbone of this story is the history it brings out into the light. I am not a historian, nor a nonfiction writer.

My hope is that you leave this novel informed, but not merely with the facts and figures; rather, I want you to be able to actually imagine it, to ask yourself how you would have fared in such terrible times. There is suffering on a scale within this novel that is almost impossible to imagine enduring: watching your children die a little more each day from starvation; the horror of being trapped in a frozen wasteland with war raging around and above you, people dying where they fall and being left there; knowing that if you lie down or sit for a rest, your body will shut down from the cold and lack of sustenance, and you will die and then your children will die.
Many of us are so lucky, that the closest we come to this is through reading about it. That an entire generation was able to move on and live out their lives after enduring such horror never ceases to amaze me. I admire any author who writes the stories of this time; the research alone would be shattering. I can see how this novel paved the way perhaps for Kristin to write The Nightingale. Winter Garden shows both the human capacity for survival and for self-recrimination.
Kristin Hannah is the award-winning and bestselling author of more than 20 novels including the international blockbuster, The Nightingale. Home Front was optioned for film by Films produced the Oscar-nominated The Help with Chris Columbus attached to write, produce, and direct. Head over there to see what square and book Mrs B has scored for bingo today. I enjoy learning more about history in a way I can be there.
Thanks for a great review. Like Liked by 2 people. It really is a terrific read! A little slower than The Nightingale perhaps, but it builds to so much.
Thanks Claire! Like Liked by 1 person. How uncanny we should pick the same square to cover for our first book bingo post! I actually had another two I was close to using instead! We must really be reading twins, lol. Lovely review. I enjoyed reading through this one. Happy book bingo day! An enthralling and rousing saga that gripped my attention and would not let go until I turned the last page. Great review and one square down! Like Like. Thanks Theresa!
Yes, one square down, very exciting. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. It is a novel that will haunt the reader long after the last page is turned. Leningrad, a once magical city besieged by war, cut off from aid, buried in snow. A city full of women desperate to save their children and themselves…. Loss and old age have taken a terrible toll on Anya Whitson.
At last, she will reach out to her estranged daughters. In a halting, uncertain voice, she begins to weave a fable about a beautiful Russian girl who lived in Leningrad a lifetime ago…. In a quest to uncover the truth behind the story, Nina and Meredith discover a secret so shocking, so impossible to believe, it shakes the foundation of their family and changes who they believe they are.
Read this as a Buddy Read on Litsy and enjoyed it very much! It is a powerful story of misunderstanding and family love between 2 daughters and their mother. There are a lot of historical reference to Russia during the war. Anya has told her daughters, Meredith and Nina, a fairytale which turns into a reality by the end of the book. It is a tearjerker that you won't be able to forget and one you should not miss!
This is the first Kristin Hannah book that I have read or listened to since I opted for the audiobook version of this book.
It was fantastic! The audio production was wonderful and I enjoyed hearing Vera's character with a Russian accent. A book club member picked this book for our group to read after hearing from another book club that this was a great book. Everyone loved it and we had a lot of discussion at our last book club meeting. I can't wait to read or listen to more books by Kristin Hannah. I hope they are all as good as the one I just read. I would highly recommend this book to others. This is the second book by Kristin Hannah that I have read and she is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.
I won a copy of Winter Garden in a Goodreads giveaway and had the opportunity to read it before it was released. This was easily one of the most painful stories I have ever read. The non-existant relationship between Anya Whitson and her daughters, Meredith and Nina, was difficult enough to read about, but the underlying reasons for that as they were revealed in the story of Anya's life in Russia during World War II were downright heartbreaking.
See a Problem?
Hannah managed to cover 60 years of back story without making it feel drawn out. The more that was revealed, the more I wanted to know. An absolutely amazing read.
I love this book and found the ending so moving that I actually read it twice. I would highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and the experience of civilians living through a war zone. Here at Walmart.
